Bright Minds Internship Program 2008

The Bright Minds Internship program was launched in the summer of 2005 targeting academically brilliant juniors and seniors of the twenty one school districts within the college district.

The program has been offered to the top five of the winners of the Academic Challenge competition offered at the Galesburg and Carthage Campuses in March of every year. The Academic Challenge is sponsored by Carl Sandburg College and the Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering (WYSE) Organization and covers seven academic categories namely, Mathematics, Chemistry, English, Physics, Biology, Engineering Graphics and Computer Science.

Last year the students were involved in an "Information Research" project on the topic of Logistics and Supply Chain Management. The project culminated in a fifteen-minute presentation to the Carl Sandburg College Board of Trustees at their regular Board Meeting in Carthage, IL on July 26, 2007.

This year, the program will focus on the topic of "Forensic Science." The team is made of five students from the K-12 school districts. The five students will work as a team on a project and will present their work to the College Board of Trustees at their regular Board meeting at the Carthage Branch Campus on July 24th, 2008.

The Internship will start on Tuesday, June 17th, 2008 and end on Tuesday, July 15th, 2008 and will involve the students spending one day a week at Carl Sandburg College campus in Galesburg and the rest of the days working at home or at a nearby CSC campus. During this time, they will go on field visits, participate in team chat, conduct interviews, and do research on the Forensic Science topic.

The program is hosted by Samuel Sudhakar, vice president of Administrative services & CIO and David Kellogg, Instructor of Criminal Justice at Carl Sandburg College.

Students will also maintain a daily journal and communicate with group members via a Blog.

Following are some of the benefits for the students:

1. Gaining knowledge in a cutting edge field and an excellent experience.
2. Field visits and opportunity to meet pioneers and leaders in the field
3. A certificate of merit and a letter of recommendation from the President of Carl Sandburg College.
4. Temporary use of a laptop and broadband Internet access
5. Stipend - $100/week

Students will be spending every Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until Noon at the College for the four weeks.
