The Bright Minds Internship program was launched in the summer of 2005 targeting academically brilliant juniors and seniors of the twenty one school districts within the college district.
The program has been offered to the top five of the winners of the Academic Challenge competition offered at the Galesburg and Carthage Campuses in March of every year. The Academic Challenge is sponsored by Carl Sandburg College and the Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering (WYSE) Organization and covers seven academic categories namely, Mathematics, Chemistry, English, Physics, Biology, Engineering Graphics and Computer Science.
Last year the students were involved in Forensic Science. The project culminated in a fifteen-minute presentation to the Carl Sandburg College Board of Trustees at their regular Board Meeting in Carthage, IL on July 24, 2008.
This year, the program will focus on the topic of "Economic Recession." The team is made of five students from the K-12 school districts. The five students will work as a team on a project and will present their work to the College Board of Trustees at their regular Board meeting at the Carthage Branch Campus on July 23, 2009.
The Internship will start on Tuesday, June 16, 2009 and end on Tuesday, July 14, 2009 and will involve the students spending one day a week at Carl Sandburg College campus in Galesburg and the rest of the days working at home or at a nearby CSC campus. During this time, they will go on field visits, participate in team chat, conduct interviews, and do research on the Economic Recession topic.
The program is hosted by Dr. Lori Sundberg, Vice President of Academic Services and Kelli Mayes-Denker, Instructor of Economics/Business Administration at Carl Sandburg College.
Students will also maintain a daily journal and communicate with group members via a Blog.
Following are some of the benefits for the students:
